Chester Christmas Market 2026 runs Wed 18 Nov to Tue 22 Dec in Town Hall Square: 80 traders, free entry, open to 8pm Thu to Sat, parade night Thu 19 Nov.

Chester Christmas Market opens on Wednesday 18 November 2026 and runs to Tuesday 22 December. It fills Town Hall Square on Northgate Street, wrapped around the city Christmas tree, with 80 traders and free entry.

Opening hours are the same every week:

Days Hours
Sunday to Wednesday 10.30am to 6.30pm
Thursday, Friday, Saturday 10.30am to 8pm

Those dates and hours are published by Marketing Cheshire, the destination organisation that owns the market, and repeated on chester.com. The market’s own site, chester-christmasmarket.com, sits behind a bot challenge and cannot be read automatically, so the contact address it publishes, hello@chester-christmasmarket.com, is the direct route for trader enquiries.

Chester Christmas Market 2026 at a glance

Whether you search for the Chester Christmas market or the Chester Xmas market, this is the 2026 season in one table. Every date below is checked against a 2026 calendar, and the sources are named. Rows marked “not yet announced” are exactly that.

Date (2026) What happens Source
Wed 18 November Market opens, 10.30am, Town Hall Square Marketing Cheshire
Thu 19 November 12 Days of Christmas Parade, from 7pm, free; the street lights come on as it passes Chester BID
Fri 20 November Grotto on the Square opens at Eastgate Square shopping centre, runs to Christmas Eve Chester BID and Eastgate Square
Sat 28 Nov, Sat 5 Dec, Sun 13 Dec, Mon 21 Dec Quieter SEN sessions at Grotto on the Square, set times only Chester BID
Thu 17 and Fri 18 December The last two Thursday and Friday late nights, to 8pm Marketing Cheshire hours
Sat 19 December The last late night of the season, to 8pm Marketing Cheshire hours
Tue 22 December Market closes for the year, 6.30pm Marketing Cheshire
Late November and December Lantern Parade, Winter Watch, Roman Saturnalia Not yet announced for 2026

The parade date comes from Chester BID’s event listing, which the BID, the parade’s sponsor, last updated on 2 September 2026 and which sits alongside its 18 November to 22 December market entry. The grotto dates and SEN sessions come from the BID’s Grotto on the Square page and its 14 August 2026 announcement: a gingerbread-themed grotto reached through “Santa’s Enchanted Elevator”, replacing the Santa’s Enchanted Grotto the BID ran for the previous five years. The full grotto details are on our Chester Santa grotto page.

The parade is the reason to pick Thursday 19 November if you can. The market is in its second day, it is open to 8pm, and the parade route passes the Town Hall, right beside the chalets.

Check the day of the week, not the number

The market runs to almost the same calendar dates each year, which makes it easy to copy last year’s day names across and get it wrong. In 2025 it opened on Wednesday 19 November. In 2026 it opens on Wednesday 18 November. Several listings sites are currently printing “Friday 18 November”, which was true in 2022 and is not true now. 18 November 2026 is a Wednesday and 22 December is a Tuesday.

Who actually runs it

Marketing Cheshire has owned and run the Chester Christmas Market since 2013. In 2022 it kept strategic control and put the operational delivery out to tender, and that contract, procurement reference MC010, is public.

The winning operator took on financial management, trader recruitment, site layout in liaison with Cheshire West and Chester Council, the alcohol and events licences, and the contractors. It also had to buy the 14 stalls Marketing Cheshire owned for £24,987 plus VAT as a condition of the award, and pays the council an annual market licence fee that started at £8,000 plus VAT (Contracts Finder, published 14 June 2022).

One detail worth noting: the contract’s stated end date is 31 December 2026. This year’s market is the last one covered by it.

Trader applications open in January, which is earlier than most people expect. If you are a maker hoping for a 2027 chalet, that is the month to watch.

The parade nights, and the switch-on that is not a switch-on

If you are searching for Chester’s Christmas lights switch-on, there is no single ceremony with a countdown and a celebrity. The city’s lights come on street by street as the 12 Days of Christmas Parade passes through, which is how chester.com describes it: “During the 12 Days of Christmas Parade each street will be illuminated as the parade passes through”, with the Town Hall Square tree arriving beforehand “awaiting the light up of the entire city” (chester.com).

Only the first 2026 parade has a date so far. Chester BID, which sponsors it, lists the 12 Days of Christmas Parade for Thursday 19 November 2026, from 7pm, free, the evening after the market opens. The Lantern Parade, the Winter Watch and the Roman Saturnalia procession are still undated, and the council had published no 2026 festive programme when we checked on 2 October. It published last year’s round-up on 11 November, so expect the rest in early November.

Here is what ran in 2025, from the council’s own announcement, as the best guide to the shape of this year (Cheshire West and Chester, 11 November 2025):

Event 2025 date Time Where
Market opens Wed 19 November 10.30am Town Hall Square
12 Days of Christmas Parade Thu 20 November 7pm Bridge Street to the Cross, Eastgate Street, St Werburgh Street, past the Town Hall, ending Watergate Street
Lantern Parade Thu 27 November 7pm Town Hall Square
Winter Watch Parade Thu 4 December 7pm Town Hall Square
Winter Watch Parade, second night Thu 11 December 7pm Town Hall Square
Roman Saturnalia Parade Thu 11 December 6.30pm Grosvenor Museum

Every one of those fell on a Thursday, in the week the market opened and the three Thursdays after it. The 2026 Thursdays in that window are 19 and 26 November and 3 and 10 December. The first of those is now confirmed by Chester BID; the other three are our arithmetic from the pattern, not an announcement.

The Winter Watch is the one to plan around

The Winter Watch Parade is not a generic Christmas procession. It comes out of the records of Chester’s medieval City Watch, which patrolled the city over Christmas and handed back the city keys, and the cast is drawn from the 1400s: Jack Frost, an Angel, fire skeletons, a dragon, ice queens, devils and cooks, led by Chester’s own Karamba Samba dressed as a ghost band (Cheshire West and Chester, 28 November 2025).

Two practical things from that announcement, both likely to repeat:

  • The market stays open until 8pm on parade nights, so the parade and the chalets work as one evening
  • Park and ride runs late on Thursdays, with the last bus from Foregate Street at 9pm

Getting there

The market is a five minute walk from Chester Market and the Northgate development, and about fifteen minutes from Chester station. Northgate Street itself is pedestrianised at market times.

Park and ride is the cheapest way in and drops you on Foregate Street, a two minute walk away. If you drive to a city car park instead, the closest are the Northgate sites and Delamere Street, and both fill fast on a market Saturday. Our parking in Chester page has every council tariff from the April 2026 fees schedule, including the free bays the council’s own web pages never list, which are worth knowing about in December.

Check roadworks and travel before a parade evening. The parades close city centre streets on a rolling basis and the council publishes its temporary traffic order for them each November.

Also on across the season

  • Lanterns and Light at Chester Zoo, Friday 13 November 2026 to Sunday 3 January 2027, 4.30pm to 8pm, tickets from £12, with a quiet hour at 4pm on selected dates and adult only evenings (Chester Zoo), covered in full on our Chester Zoo Lanterns page
  • Rapunzel at Storyhouse, 4 December to 3 January, covered on our Chester pantomime page
  • Chester Cathedral’s Christmas Tree Festival, 25 November to 3 January, next to the market; see our Christmas Tree Festival page
  • The Snowman tour, still TBC for 2026

The last week: Chester Christmas Market 2026 closes on 22 December

The market does not run up to Christmas Eve. It closes on Tuesday 22 December 2026, so there is nothing to visit on 23, 24 or 25 December, or in the week between Christmas and New Year.

That makes the end of the season tighter than people expect:

  • Saturday 19 December is the last late night, open to 8pm
  • Sunday 20, Monday 21 and Tuesday 22 December are the final three days, and all three are on the short hours, 10.30am to 6.30pm
  • The last Thursday and Friday late nights are 17 and 18 December

If you want an evening at the chalets with the lights on, the last realistic window is 17 to 19 December.

Where it is, and the postcode that actually works

Town Hall Square sits on Northgate Street, between the Town Hall and Chester Cathedral, a few minutes’ walk from the Cross. The Town Hall’s own postcode is CH1 2HJ; Marketing Cheshire’s listing for the market gives CH1 2HQ. Both put a satnav on the same short stretch of Northgate Street, and neither gets you parking, because Northgate Street is pedestrianised at market times.

Frequently asked questions

When is Chester Christmas Market 2026?

Wednesday 18 November to Tuesday 22 December 2026, in Town Hall Square on Northgate Street.

What are the opening times?

10.30am to 6.30pm Sunday to Wednesday, and 10.30am to 8pm on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The hours are the same every week of the season.

How much does it cost to get in?

Nothing. Entry to the market is free; you only pay the traders.

Is the market open on Christmas Eve?

No. The 2026 market closes on 22 December, two days before Christmas Eve.

How many stalls are there?

Marketing Cheshire puts it at 80 traders in wooden chalets, wrapped around the city Christmas tree.

Do I need a ticket for Chester Christmas Market 2026?

No. There are no tickets and no booking; you walk in. The only things in the season you book in advance are the grotto at Eastgate Square and paid events such as Lanterns and Light at Chester Zoo.

Is there a Christmas market in Chester this year?

Yes. The 2026 market is confirmed by Marketing Cheshire for Wednesday 18 November to Tuesday 22 December, in its usual place in Town Hall Square.

Is there a Christmas lights switch-on?

Not as a single ceremony. Chester lights its streets one at a time as the 12 Days of Christmas Parade passes through. Chester BID lists that parade for Thursday 19 November 2026 from 7pm. The other parades are not dated yet; last year’s council programme came out on 11 November.

When is the best night to go?

Thursday 19 November, if you can make it: the market is open to 8pm and the 12 Days of Christmas Parade runs through the city from 7pm. For a quieter visit, a weekday morning from 10.30am avoids the Saturday crowds.

Where should I park?

Park and ride is the cheapest option and drops you on Foregate Street, a two minute walk away. The nearest car parks are the Northgate sites and Delamere Street, and both fill early on a market Saturday.

What we will do with this page

The market dates are fixed, and the first parade now has its date. We will check the council’s newsroom through October and early November and add the remaining 2026 parade dates, times and routes, plus the road closures, as soon as they are published. Last checked: 2 October 2026.
