Bouverie Street in Chester is resurfaced by day to 14 October and the M53 shuts northbound most nights. Chester to Crewe trains go to buses 5 to 9 October.

Bouverie Street is the Chester road to plan around this week. It is being resurfaced in the daytime until 14 October, the longest single job on the council’s resurfacing programme. Weston Grove in Upton is closed by day until 7 October as well.

This week’s live closures, in short:

  • Bouverie Street, Chester, daytime resurfacing from 9.30am, to 14 October

And the thing that still has not happened. The rebuilt A51 signals at Boughton were promised for the week beginning 7 September. Twenty-six days later, none of the council’s relevant pages says the junction has reopened.

Check today’s closures first

Cheshire West and Chester publishes a live roadworks page covering council and utility works. Two local quirks are worth knowing. The map button goes to the council’s Symology system at cwacvi.symology.net, and a second map, OneView at oneview.triopsis.com, is where you register for alerts. Neither is the one.network system most neighbouring councils use.

Two caveats come from the council itself:

  • Emergency utility works can start before they appear on the map. Firms have two hours after starting to file an emergency permit, and the council says it is often unaware until someone gets in touch.
  • When an A road closes, its signed diversion has to run via another A road, because lower-class roads may not suit larger vehicles. That is why a short closure can produce a long detour.

What is being resurfaced, and when

The council’s carriageway resurfacing programme still lists 37 schemes. Eighteen have finished, four are running today and 15 are still to come, with the last booked to end on 27 November.

The Northwich nights are over. Chester Way, Church Road and Venables Road all finished by 25 September, and the A54 Middlewich Road job at Winsford Wharton finished on 2 October.

Two of the next ones are on main roads. The A556 at Hartford goes overnight from 13 October, a week after the Abbey Arms job at Delamere ends on the same road. The A540 slip road to the A494 at Saughall runs for a fortnight of nights from 16 October, on the main route between Chester and Deeside.

No date changes this week

We publish this table in full because the council edits the programme in place, with no changelog. Between 16 and 23 September it re-dated 18 of the 37 schemes. This time we compared every row with the version we published on 23 September, and none has moved.

The council still warns that the dates “are subject to change due to weather conditions, other emergencies, and potential conflicts with other works on the diversion routes”. Treat the list as a plan rather than a promise.

  • Over Square, Winsford, nights, 20 to 24 November
  • Canalside, Ellesmere Port, nights, 19 to 27 November, and A534 Barnhill Road, Broxton, nights, 20 to 27 November, the last two schemes of the season

A51 Hoole Lane: 26 days on, still no word

The council has been rebuilding the traffic signals at the A51 Tarvin Road junction with Hoole Lane in Boughton since 13 July 2026. It costed the job at about eight weeks. Throughout, Hoole Lane has been closed at the junction, with access from the A41 end and exit via Westminster Road, and the A51 has run on a single lane.

The overnight resurfacing phase finished on Thursday 3 September, according to the resurfacing programme. What was left was signal poles, cabling and commissioning.

We checked the council’s pages again on 3 October. None has changed:

  • the scheme page still carries its August wording, that the signals are “expected to be switched on and the route fully reopened during the week commencing 7 September” and that traffic management “remains unchanged”
  • the traffic signals programme still gives the finish as Friday 4 September
  • the scheme is still listed under current improvement projects
  • nothing about the junction has appeared on the council’s news page

So we still cannot confirm from a council source that the junction has reopened. We will not report that it has until one of those pages says so. If you are heading for Boughton, check the roadworks map before you set off.

Three further signal upgrades sit on the same programme, at Mill Lane in Upton, Hoole Road and Rossmore Road. All three are still listed as dates to be confirmed.

Trains: Chester to Crewe closed overnight from Monday

Transport for Wales lists these works affecting Chester, in order:

  • Monday 5 to Friday 9 October: all lines close overnight between Chester and Crewe. From about 21:00 Monday to Thursday until about 05:00 the next morning, a reduced service runs, with buses replacing some trains.
  • Monday 12 to Thursday 15 October: overnight work between Shrewsbury and Chester. The 23:53 Shrewsbury to Chester does not run, the 22:23 and 23:33 Crewe to Wrexham General both terminate at Chester with buses on to Wrexham, and the 21:09 Birmingham International to Manchester Piccadilly is diverted via Crewe, with a bus between Shrewsbury and Chester.
  • Sunday 1 November: work in the Crewe area, in the daytime. This is the one to diarise. Liverpool Lime Street to Chester trains are cancelled, with buses from Liverpool South Parkway. Manchester Piccadilly to Chester trains are replaced by buses, Northern’s Manchester to Chester service runs only as far as Greenbank with buses on to Chester, the Crewe to Chester shuttles do not run, and Avanti runs no trains between London Euston and Holyhead.
  • Monday 2 to Friday 6 November: overnight work in the Chester area. The 21:09 Birmingham International to Manchester Piccadilly stops at Chester with a bus onward, the 23:25 Manchester Airport to Llandudno Junction starts from Chester, and the 03:52 Chester to Manchester Airport does not run.
  • Monday 9 to Thursday 12 November: the 21:36 Cardiff Central to Chester runs only as far as Shrewsbury, with a bus on to Chester via Crewe.
  • Tuesday 17 to Friday 20 November: overnight work between Crewe and Chester. The 21:26 Cardiff Central to Chester stops at Crewe with a bus onward, and the 04:58 Chester to Crewe does not run.
  • Monday 7 to Friday 11 December: no late night or early morning trains between Chester and Manchester Airport.
  • Tuesday 15 to Thursday 17 December: the 22:02 Chester to Liverpool Lime Street and the 23:22 back are replaced by buses.

M53 and M56: what is shut each night this week

National Highways is resurfacing the M53 between junctions 7 and 10, the Ellesmere Port stretch, from 8 July to 27 November (North West maintenance schemes). It closes overnight, 9pm to 6am, Monday to Friday, one direction at a time. The same page gave the M56 junctions 14 to 15 resurfacing an end date of 29 September, but closures at junction 14 are still booked this week.

The detail of each night is in National Highways’ road closure report, a spreadsheet now re-issued daily. The edition covering 2 to 8 October books these closures near Chester:

  • M53 northbound, junctions 10 to 7, full closure from 8pm to 6am on the nights of Monday 5 to Thursday 8 October, with the junction 10 and 9 entry slips, the 9 and 8 exit slips, the junction 8 entry slip and the junction 7 exit slip
  • M56 westbound at junction 14, both slip roads and the link road to the M53 southbound, closed Saturday night, 9pm to 6am, for drainage
  • M56 westbound from junction 14 to the A494 at Park Gate, closed Sunday night, 9pm to 5am, with the junction 14 entry slip, both M56 to M53 link roads and the A494 westbound Park Gate exit slip
  • M56 eastbound junction 14 entry slip, closed Monday to Wednesday nights, 9pm to 5am, for an inspection
  • M53 southbound, junctions 4 to 5 on the Wirral, closed Monday to Thursday nights for structure maintenance

No A55 closures near Chester are listed for this week. Daytime journeys are largely unaffected; it is the late-evening run to Liverpool, the airport or the M6 where you meet the cones. On the Welsh side of the border the A55 and A483 become Traffic Wales roads, so check there separately.

A54 Winsford Station Bridge: two-way at 7.5 tonnes, not yet confirmed

The A54 crosses the West Coast Main Line beside Winsford station on a four-span post-tensioned bridge built in the early 1960s. Since 19 July it has been down to one lane while engineers inspect the steel tendons buried inside its concrete.

On 22 September the council said the bridge would go back to two-way running. Its news release set out the terms:

  • a 7.5 tonne weight restriction and a 20mph speed limit, both to protect the structure
  • the restrictions come in “as soon as signage has been manufactured and installed”, which the council then expected early the following week
  • lorries over 7.5 tonnes get a signed diversion via the A533 Bostock Road and A5018 Wharton Park Road

That week has passed and the council has not said the change happened. On 3 October its scheme page still says the warning signs “are currently being manufactured” and that it is aiming to have the arrangement “in place as soon as possible”. No council release or page has yet said two-way running has started, so we cannot confirm it either way. Go by the signs on the bridge.

The manned temporary signals once planned for Bostock Road are not coming back. The page says they “were trialled at Bostock roundabout but didn’t improve the current traffic delays for vehicles leaving the industrial estate”. Winsford Industrial Estate sits on the far side of the crossing, so the 7.5 tonne limit, once in force, puts HGVs off the A54 bridge altogether.

Detailed investigation continues. Some of the work can only be done during pre-planned Saturday night railway closures agreed with Network Rail. The council has applied to the Department for Transport’s Structures Fund for the repair money.

The rest of the picture

  • Cadent gas mains: the council also carries a gas pipes upgrade programme page for Cadent’s mains replacement work. It publishes no schedule of streets or dates, so the live map is the only way to see where the crews are this week.
  • Severn Trent water mains, to April 2027: the biggest single utility scheme in the area is the replacement of about 41km of water pipe across Great Barrow, Mickle Trafford, Aldford, Saighton, Eccleston and Pulford. It began on 2 February 2026 and is expected to run to April 2027 (council page). If you drive those villages, expect rolling temporary works rather than one long closure.
  • Nicholas Street Viaduct (A5268 inner ring road): the 300-metre, 13-span viaduct carrying St Martin’s Way past the City Walls is under a long inspection and repair programme. The traffic contraflow has ended and work on the top of the bridge is complete, but inspection over the railway needs a series of Saturday-night railway closures, with short closures of Canal Street and Garden Lane (scheme page).
  • ANPR junction cameras, consultation now closed: a consultation that ran 5 August to 16 September 2026 proposed moving-traffic enforcement at 11 candidate locations, four of which will be chosen first. The council said the 2024 phase cut contraventions such as banned turns and box-junction blocking by about 68% (council news).
  • Fountains Roundabout: after a two-stage trial with the signals switched off, 3,063 survey responses came back 90% in favour, pedestrian crossings rose 120% and subway use fell 29%. The signals stay off and a permanent scheme is being designed (junction schemes page).
  • Queens Park Suspension Bridge, the 1923 footbridge over the Dee at the Groves, remains open for normal use (council page).

What a day’s parking actually costs

The prices below come from the council’s statutory fees and charges schedule as at 1 April 2026, which is more up to date than several of the council’s own car park web pages.

The two big central car parks are the most expensive long stays the council runs. Bishop Street in Hoole and Garden Lane cost a fraction of them.

New Market Parking on Hunter Street (800 spaces, multi-storey, EV charging) is the priciest: £4.50 for the first hour, rising to £11 for over six, with a £4.50 flat rate from 6pm. Blue Badge holders resident in Cheshire West whose badge is microchipped park free there for up to four hours. Delamere Street (351 spaces, open 6.30am to 9pm) runs £4.50 to £10.50 on the same scale. Little Roodee by the river (452 spaces, takes coaches and motorhomes) is £6.50 for up to twelve hours, £9.50 for twelve to twenty-four, and £2 from 6pm to 7am.

Cheaper options the council does not advertise loudly:

  • Sandy Lane, Chester (36 spaces): free for up to four hours.
  • Curzon Street, Saltney (12 spaces): free at all times.
  • Christleton Road (19 spaces): 50p for two hours, and free after 5pm Monday to Saturday and all day Sunday.
  • Bishop Street, Hoole (82 spaces): £1 for two hours, £1.50 for the four-hour maximum, £1 overnight.
  • Garden Lane (120 spaces): £2 for an hour, £5 for over four hours, £2 from 6pm.
  • Brook Street (137 spaces): £2 for an hour, £5 for four to six hours, £2 from 6pm.
  • Hamilton Place (9 spaces): Blue Badge holders only, free for up to four hours.

Park and ride: three routes, £2.50

Chester’s park and ride, run by Stagecoach for the council, has three circular routes into the city, with timetables that changed on 4 January 2026:

  • PR1 Wrexham Road (1,200 spaces): every 20 minutes, weekdays from 7am, last bus back at 6.40pm.
  • PR2 Boughton Heath (750 spaces): every 15 minutes on weekdays, 7am to 6.30pm.
  • PR3 Upton, by the zoo (460 spaces): every 15 to 20 minutes on weekdays, also serving the Countess of Chester Hospital and the university.

Fares in the 2026/27 schedule: an adult day ticket is £2.50, a young person’s day ticket for ages 5 to 18 is £1, under-5s travel free with an adult, a group of up to five is £5, and a Multi 6 carnet is £12.50 on the Stagecoach app. There is also a £1.50 Countess ticket, valid on PR3 only between Upton and Liverpool Road for the hospital, sold as a paper ticket rather than on the app.

Two catches: concessionary bus passes are not accepted, and the old Sealand Road site remains suspended. All three sites have a 2.1m height barrier, with over-height areas at Boughton Heath and Upton. Sunday buses start later, around 10.20am to 10.30am, worth knowing if you are heading in for a race day or a day out from our things to do list.

The key routes, for orientation

  • A5268 St Martin’s Way: Chester’s inner ring road, the dual carriageway built so the centre could be pedestrianised. The Nicholas Street Viaduct carries it past the walls (Wikipedia).
  • A55 North Wales Expressway: the grade-separated dual carriageway running from Chester along the coast to Holyhead (Wikipedia).
  • A483: south past the Grosvenor Bridge area towards Wrexham, and in Welsh hands within a few miles (Wikipedia).
  • A51 and A56: the eastern radials, to Tarvin and Nantwich, and to Frodsham and Warrington respectively.
  • M53 and M56: the Wirral and North Cheshire motorways, joined at the Stoak interchange north of the city, both under overnight resurfacing this season.

Buses

City and local routes are run mainly by Stagecoach from the Chester Bus Interchange, under its Merseyside and South Lancashire network (Stagecoach route pages), alongside Arriva, D&G and several smaller operators on the borough’s other routes (council operator list).

What it means for you

If you drive Bouverie Street, expect daytime works until 14 October. It is a fortnight-long booking, the longest on the council’s list.

If you drive through Boughton, do not assume anything has changed. The promised reopening week passed 26 days ago with no word from the council, so treat Hoole Lane as still shut at the junction and the A51 as still on one lane until you see the new lights working.

If you drive over Winsford Station Bridge, watch for the signs rather than the calendar. The council has not yet confirmed the two-way, 7.5 tonne arrangement is in place. If you drive anything heavier, plan on the A533 and A5018 from now on.

If you use the M53 in the evening, the northbound carriageway between junctions 10 and 7 is shut from 8pm Monday to Thursday night, slip roads included. If you are heading west on the M56 this weekend, junction 14 and the links to the M53 are shut on Saturday and Sunday nights.

If you use the railway late at night, Chester to Crewe runs a reduced service with buses from about 9pm on Monday to Thursday this week. Put Sunday 1 November in the diary too. It is the only daytime closure on the list, and it takes out the Liverpool, Manchester and Crewe trains at once.

If you were expecting work on your street, the dates held this week. Hoole Way roundabout, on the inner ring road, is next in Chester itself, for four nights from 26 October.

If you are simply paying to park, the schedule is worth two minutes of your time. A full day at New Market costs £11, while Garden Lane charges £5 and Sandy Lane charges nothing at all for four hours.

Are there train replacement buses at Chester in October 2026?

Yes, overnight. From Monday 5 to Friday 9 October all lines close overnight between Chester and Crewe, with a reduced service and buses replacing some trains from about 21:00 to about 05:00. From 12 to 15 October overnight work between Shrewsbury and Chester cancels the 23:53 Shrewsbury to Chester and turns the late Crewe to Wrexham trains round at Chester.
